  • Overview

    The therapeutic recreation intern will experience all aspects of a community-based life enrichment program while gaining valuable experience in all areas of the National Council of Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) job task competencies. The goal of this internship will be to gain a better understanding of the role of therapeutic recreation within a Day Treatment and Habilitation program and be better prepared to work in this field within the nonprofit sector. Rise Anoka serves 65 individuals with a range of special needs. We focus on life enrichment so a large portion of the intern’s day to day activities would include planning and leading activities, such as arts and crafts, baking, sensory, and physical activity, to meet a wide range of abilities.

    • Assist with initial intakes and ongoing assessments with the people we support using a person-centered approach. They will help with any new individuals entering the program and help the program supervisors with their caseload
    • Manage monthly outcome reporting for the people we serve.
    • Assist with facilitating meetings with individual’s care team.
    • Develop, coordinate, and manage program activities and assist in leading them. Plan regular activity outings for people supported.
    • Provide training and mentoring to staff in areas of therapeutic recreation.

    Qualifications & Benefits


    • Currently enrolled in a therapeutic recreation program at a college or university
    • Experience or desire to work with individuals with developmental disabilities
    • Successful clearance of DHS background check
    • Previous experience practicing person centered practices with people with disabilities or other barriers preferred.
    • Certification in CPR and First Aid preferred.

    Time Commitment: 

    • 40 hours per week
